Esgic Plus is one of the most popular non-narcotic pain medications that is a combination of three key ingredients. The combination of butalbital (a barbiturate), acetaminophen (an analgesic) and caffeine (a stimulant) serves to provide relief from tension-type headaches, which account for almost 90% of all headaches.
Esgic Plus is a relaxant that can also ease migraine headaches, reduce fever and provide relief from muscle contraction headaches. This is possible because of butalbital, which slows down one’s central nervous system, thereby facilitating relaxation. Caffeine helps prolong the analgesic nature of this medication, making it a very effective remedy.
Esgic Plus Benefits:
- Provides quick relief from tension-type headaches
- Acts as a long-lasting relaxant
- Also reduces fever and improves blood circulation
- Reduces anxiety and improves sleep
What Esgic Plus Is Used For:
If there’s one thing most people share in common, it’s the occasional headache. Esgic Plus is a very effective medication that provides quick and effective relief from the pain caused by tension-type headaches. Its sedative nature fights the stress and induces sleep, when it can be quite difficult otherwise to sleep through the pain. Esgic Plus has also been known to help in the treatment of migraine headaches.
How Esgic Plus Works:
Tension-type headaches can involve a fair amount of pain that can last for lengthy periods of time if not treated quickly. The acetaminophen in Esgic Plus is the most important component of this medication as its analgesic nature decreases the pain caused by the headache. It does not take very long to feel the effects of the drug and it is important to adhere to the required dosage. The presence of caffeine helps prolong the effectiveness of acetaminophen. Most importantly, headaches can severely affect one’s sleep pattern. Butalbital enhances the sleep-inducing nature of this medication, while reducing anxiety.
Esgic Plus Side Effects:
As with most other drugs, you need to consult with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this or any form of prescription medication. Prior to using Esgic Plus, you should inform your doctor about any allergy that you may have. Some of the side effects you may experience with Esgic Plus are nausea, vomiting, shortness of breath, abdominal pain, increased urination, dizziness, light-headedness or drowsiness. If you experience any of these, please call or see your doctor as soon as possible.
To reduce any risk of light-headedness or dizziness, it is imperative that you stand up slowly if you are seated or lying down. Serious side effects have been found to be extremely rare with Esgic Plus and are usually caused by exceeding the prescribed dosage or combining it with other medications. Your doctor has prescribed Esgic Plus for you after judging that its benefits far outweigh any potential side effects.
Esgic Plus Precautions:
Butalbital, the barbiturate component of Esgic Plus, can become a problem for some people when taken over an extended period of time. The body may develop a tolerance to the regular dose of Esgic Plus and subsequent consumption of larger amounts may then be required to produce the initial effects. This can also lead to a mental or physical dependence on the drug and become habit-forming. When larger amounts are consumed on a regular basis, it may become difficult to discontinue the medication as doing so may lead to the patient experiencing withdrawal symptoms. One of the main symptoms in cases of withdrawal is the occurrence of new headaches.
Acetaminophen may add considerable stress to the liver and it is imperative that you avoid daily consumption of alcohol as the combination of the two can lead to complications with the liver. If you have a history of liver problems, you need to consult your doctor prior to taking Esgic Plus. Acetaminophen can also be found in some non-prescription medications and you should consult your doctor if you are taking any other medication. While the inclusion of caffeine helps prolong the effectiveness of Esgic Plus, prolonged use of the drug can lead to a physical dependence on caffeine as well. In order to avoid a habit-forming dependence and subsequent withdrawal symptoms, please follow the dosage prescribed by your doctor.
How To Take Esgic Plus
Consult your doctor or pharmacist to find out the appropriate dosage for you. Your recommended dosage will depend on your medical history and any allergic reactions you may have had in the past. Do not exceed the limit prescribed by your doctor and do not skip taking Esgic Plus at the right time. Do not extend the course of medication unless prescribed by your doctor.
For adults, the recommended dose is usually one to two capsules or tablets every four hours, as required. If the Esgic Plus you are purchasing contains 325 or 500mg of acetaminophen, then you should not exceed six tablets or capsules a day.
If you miss a dose, do not double-dose when the next slot comes around. Instead, try to take it as close to the time you were supposed to in the first place. If it is time for the next one, do not take more than one dose. In case of overdose or any adverse reactions with alcohol consumption, please seek medical attention immediately.
