Cialis is a brand name and contains Tadalafil. Cialis is an FDA approved drug and is widely used in the United States. Cialis is used for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in males as well as male impotency. Cialis acts by inhibiting a particular enzyme in the body. This helps to increase the blood flow to the penis. The blood vessels of the penis engorge with blood and make the penis harder. Coupled with sexual stimulation, you are able to achieve the desired penile erection. It is also used in the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension. Cialis is available in the tablet form, in various doses like 5mg, 10mg and 20 mg. You must take Cialis no more than once per day, in the dosage prescribed for you by your doctor.
Cialis is used for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in males. It acts by inhibiting a particular enzyme, which helps increase the blood supply to the penis. Increased blood supply enables successful erection of the penis. Cialis helps achieve a successful erection of the penis as well as helps in maintaining the erection. Cialis is also known to reduce the pulmonary arterial pressure, hence is also used in the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension.
The main effect of Cialis is promoting penile erection and sustaining the erection. The mechanism of action is as follows - It works by blocking or inhibiting a certain enzyme called phosphodiesterase – PDE5. The blockage of this enzyme increases the blood flow to the penis. Once the blood vessels in the penis engorge with blood, the penis becomes taut. Thus increased blood flow to the penis, helps you to achieve an erection. Sexual stimulation causes release of nitric oxide in the penis, which activates an enzyme called guanylate cyclase. Guanylate cyclase is responsible for the production of cycle guanosine monophosphate, abbreviated as cGMP. cGMP helps control the blood flow to the penis. Under normal conditions, Phosphodiesterase – PDE5 destroys cGMP. Cialis inhibits the action of phosphodiesterase and thus conserves cGMP. cGMP thus helps to increase the blood flow into the penis and is responsible for penile erection.
In patients suffering from pulmonary arterial hypertension, the pulmonary arteries exhibit a decrease in the size of the lumen and increased resistance to blood flow. Cialis helps decrease the resistance of the pulmonary artery by aiding vascular remodeling and thus helps reduce pulmonary artery hypertension. Cialis also relaxes the pulmonary artery and increases the size of the lumen to increase the blood flow to optimal levels. High pulmonary artery pressures cause a lot of back pressure changes in the right ventricle. Thus Cialis helps prevent serious complications of pulmonary arterial hypertension, if treatment is started well before any structural changes have begun.
Cialis is available in the form of tablets. Various doses of Cialis are available like 5mg, 10mg and 20 mg. Cialis must be taken once a day. Once taken, it is effective for about 36 hours. Cialis is preferred over Viagra as it has a longer half life of about 17.50 hours as compared to 4.0 to 5.0 hours in the case of Viagra. Most doctors recommend that you start using Cialis in the dose of 10 mg to begin with. Thereafter it can be increased gradually to 20 mg or decreased to 5 mg based on your response to the dosage. You must take a tablet atleast 30 minutes to an hour prior to sexual activity. You must take Cialis orally with a glass of water. You can take Cialis either on an empty stomach or after meals.
Cialis is also used in the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension. For treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension, doctors usually prescribe 20 mg of Cialis twice a day.
Most individuals tolerate Cialis quite well and only a very few percentage of individuals suffer from a few of the side effects. The most common side effects that individuals experience due to Cialis are headache, back pain, generalized body aches, muscle pains, flushing of the face, congestion of the nostrils, indigestion, nausea, vomiting etc. Some individuals experience back pain and muscle pains about 12 to 24 hours after taking Cialis and the pains disappear after 48 hours. Some individuals may develop errors in vision. Conditions like optic neuropathy have developed in a few cases. The risk of vision problems more in individuals suffering from some preexisting anatomical or physiological defects in vision, hypertension, diabetes, coronary artery disease, hyperlipidaemia, smokers and those over the age of 50 years. Cialis may cause sudden hearing loss. If you notice any kind of impairment in hearing, you must report to your doctor immediately.
If you are suffering from high blood pressure, ischaemic heart disease, diabetes etc. you must inform your doctor about the same. Cialis interacts with certain medications commonly used in the treatment of high blood pressure and angina. Cialis can cause a transient decrease in blood pressure following intake. Hence you must not consume any compound or drug containing organic nitrates like amyl nitrate. This can increase your chances of suffering from severe hypotension. If you must take amyl nitrate, make sure you take it after a gap of 48 hours following consumption of Cialis. This gap is to ensure that all tadalafil is excreted from your body. Similarly if you are taking any nitrate compound like glyceryl trinitrate for angina, you must maintain the necessary gap between the nitrate compound and Cialis. In case you do experience angina during the time gap, you must seek immediate medical attention. You must also inform the doctor concerned about the time interval since your last dose of Cialis.
